In a significant move, the state of Karnataka has decided to introduce guidelines that will guarantee patients' "right to die with dignity", including the decision to call for end-of-life care and the need to empower critically ill patients to decide their own fate.

The guidelines will allow patients to choose euthanasia or passive euthanasia under certain conditions, allowing them to legally and ethically end their suffering. The guidelines follow principles set by the Supreme Court of India, which previously recognised the right of individuals to refuse life-saving treatment in certain circumstances.

The Karnataka government is currently formulating clear guidelines and procedures to ensure that procedures are carried out under strict medical supervision and in accordance with the law. The decision has triggered a debate on ethics, morality and medical treatment, while also emphasizing the need for patients to be treated with respect and dignity in the final stages of their lives.
